Metabolic Regulation and Diabetes

Metabolism impacts all cellular functions and plays a fundamental role in the processes necessary to maintain an organism. Metabolic pathways are complex and interdependent. With regard to changes in the cell environment, metabolism must be finely regulated to maintain a constant set of conditions within cells called homeostasis. Diabetes Mellitus is a malfunction of metabolic regulation, a syndrome in which patients do not produce sufficient levels of insulin or do not react normally to insulin. Type 1 Diabetes is believed to result following autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells. Type 2 Diabetes is related to life style changes such as obesity. A large number of cytokines and growth factors are involved in both metabolic regulation in general and diabetes in particular.
